The Hormone Made by Sunlight
August in France is glorious and, this year, intensely hot. The days stretch long into the evening, the skies seem endlessly blue and the warmth of the sun reminds us that summer is more than a season.
It is a source of life.
Beyond the pleasure of holidays, outdoor lunches and bare feet on warm ground, sunlight performs something rather extraordinary inside the body. When ultraviolet B rays touch the skin, they begin a series of reactions that allow the body to produce vitamin D3.
We call it a vitamin.
Yet once activated, it behaves more like a hormone.
More than the “bone vitamin”
Vitamin D is best known for helping the body absorb calcium and maintain healthy bones and teeth. That role is essential, but it is only the beginning of the story.
Vitamin D receptors are found in tissues throughout the body, including the muscles, immune system, brain and reproductive organs. Its active form communicates with these receptors and influences a remarkable range of biological processes.
It contributes to normal immune function, supports muscle strength, participates in cell division and interacts with the wider endocrine system. Vitamin D signalling is also active within areas of the brain involved in mood and cognition.
This does not mean vitamin D alone controls your hormones, happiness or health. The body is far too intelligent and interconnected for such simple equations. But it does mean that low vitamin D status can affect far more than the skeleton.
Why healthy levels matter as we age
Ageing changes the way the body produces and uses many nutrients, and vitamin D is no exception.
The skin becomes less efficient at producing it. We may spend more time indoors. Muscles and bones require greater support, while the immune system becomes increasingly dependent on the foundations we have built over time.
Research has associated low vitamin D status with poorer bone and muscle health, reduced immune resilience and changes in mood and general wellbeing. Associations do not prove that vitamin D is the sole cause, of course, but they remind us how widely this nutrient participates in the body’s internal conversation.
Vitamin D is not an optional decorative extra.
It is part of the architecture of vitality.
Why deficiency is so common
Modern life has quietly moved us away from the sun.
We work in offices, travel in cars, exercise indoors and move between homes, shops and restaurants without spending much meaningful time outside. In winter, particularly in northern countries, sunlight may not contain enough ultraviolet B radiation for the skin to produce adequate vitamin D.
Skin tone, age, latitude, season, clothing and time spent outdoors all influence how much vitamin D a person can make. This is why a universal prescription such as “fifteen minutes is enough” does not work for everyone.
Your needs are personal.
A blood test remains the most reliable way to understand your vitamin D status and determine whether additional support may be appropriate. For longevity, I would aim for levels between 60-80ng/mL.
Welcome the sun wisely
During spring and summer, short periods of regular sunlight exposure can help the body produce vitamin D. The amount needed varies from one person to another, but the principle is simple: give your skin an opportunity to meet the sun while avoiding redness, burning or prolonged unprotected exposure.
More is not always better.
The same sunlight that supports vitamin D production can damage the skin when exposure becomes excessive. The goal is not to roast gently like a Mediterranean vegetable. It is to find the point at which nourishment ends and damage begins.
Balance, as always, is the real medicine.
When sunlight is not enough
During autumn and winter, people living in northern climates may produce very little vitamin D from sunlight alone. Supplementation can therefore become particularly relevant, especially for those who spend limited time outdoors, cover most of their skin or have already been found to have low levels.
Vitamin D is fat soluble, so it is generally best taken with a meal containing healthy fats. When choosing a supplement, dosage should reflect individual needs rather than the seductive logic that more must surely be better.
